Baptism is the first important step that a parent can take to begin the lifelong process of faith formation for their child. When a child is baptized they receive the light of Christ’s love and are welcomed into the faith community. At the same time, the parents are making a commitment to raise their child in faith.


Parents who wish to have a child baptized at St. Anthony are asked to participate in a Baptism Preparation class. These sessions are held every other month, on a Sunday morning.

The Baptism class is for first time parents and parents who have not had a child baptized at St. Anthony to prepare for the ritual. The focus is on understanding the theology of Baptism, the meaning behind the symbols and ritual, as well as an introduction to the role of parents in their child’s faith formation. 


Parents are encouraged to attend the preparation session before their child is born.


If you are unable to attend a session prior to the birth of your child infants are welcome to stay with parents. On-site childcare is available for children 5 and younger with pre-registration.



Baptisms are usually celebrated twice a month at 12:30 or during the 5:00, 9:00, or 10:45 Mass. To register, please contact Ann Grunwaldt in the Faith Formation office at grunwaldta@stanthony.cc or 262-691-9170 ext. 1137.

Who is eligible to be a Godparent? 
  • Only one sponsor is required in Baptism, no more than two are permitted.
  • Two sponsors of the same gender are not allowed. One must be male and the other female.
  • One must be a practicing Catholic, having received the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation.
  • Sponsors must be 16 years old.
  • Sponsors cannot be the child’s parents.
  • If the Godparents cannot be present at the Baptism, a proxy may be appointed to represent them.



Some other things to consider: 
  • Look for someone who truly lives the faith—they should be an example to the child that the faith is important to someone else beyond their parents.
  • Find someone who will support you in your effort to nurture your child’s faith.
  • Choose someone who will build a special relationship with your child.
